Saturday, I went down to the big Jobs and Justice rally – and I was never so proud in my life.
From the Washington Monument to the Lincoln Memorial, the Mall was jammed. And what a big difference from that phony Glenn Beck rally on August 28 – and I attended both.
His rally was pure Tea Party. This was real America.
People at Beck’s rally were all old and white. This crowd was young, old, black, brown, men, women, gay, straight – reflecting the great diversity of America.
The August 28 crowd was angry. This crowd was upbeat, spirited – and, yes, happy.
Beck’s people were there for one reason: anger at government. On October 2, people came to Washington for jobs, justice, education, peace, environment, and a host of other progressive issues. All good reasons for not letting Republicans take back control of either the House or Senate.
I was especially happy to see so many of our great union brothers and sisters there, proudly wearing their union t-shirts: from the Machinists, AFSCME, SEIU, Teamsters, UAW, Steelworkers, Nurses, Teachers, Utility Workers and so many others.
It was a great day for America. And, after that display of energy on October 2, I’ve no doubt Democrats can win on November 2.
That’s my parting shot for today.
